Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

I gave a buddy "old" production Soviet tubes...

(6922 equivalents) from ATSI and a pair Siemens 7dj8's to use in his AI 3A (can't remember which one's went into the phono section). He is thrilled with the sound and on short auditions in both of our systems I felt that it was quite musical as well. The ATSI tubes were $40/mp @ the time for the highest grade (they were $45/mp the last time I checked) and the 7dj8's were a little less from a private source. This was 6 months ago and they are still running fine in the 3A. You might check the archives to see if 7dj8's will last in the L1 as this is where I obtained the info on the 3A. I tried both of them in my Audion amp (way different application than the AI, mind you) and thought that they both were nice tubes. The Soviet's were similar to my Siemens E88CC & E188CC tubes and the Siemens 7dj8's had more of a soft Amperex/Mullard sound. Both smoked late production Sovteks in every way. If you have difficulty finding either of these tubes and would like to try them, give me an email and I can place them in the classifieds (so that everything is on the up and up) for my cost which was $35-$40 per pair. I have two quads and would part with a pair of each. I am not familiar with the Mullard 7dj8's that Lampa mentions and these sound interesting as well (I like Mullard E88CC's a lot). I did pick up 7dj8's marked Telefunken <> and they would not hold a bass line (very mushy in my amp). Also the Tungstram 6922 types that I have are very bright and cold. I would't think that they are the sound that you are looking for, but again it's a different circuit and maybe they will not be this way in the AI.
