Buying tubes on ebay is scary if you pay some of the insane prices that people seem to be willing to pay. I have had extremely good luck, but I strictly limit the amount I am willing to pay. I typically buy 6DJ8 family and 6FQ7. I just bought what appears to be a NOS sleeve of Sylvania 6FQ7: price $10. Now if I get junk I am out $2 bucks a tube, a risk I am willing to take. Would I purchase a Siemans 6DJ8 'super tube' for $100 a piece? No way. I would be willing to pay about $5-10 for a used one. Again, if it is junk I am out $5-10.If you like to tube roll and experiment with different sounds then ebay can be a great resource. I will $5-10 for a different tube to try it. If it goes south in short order so be it. By that time I have decided if I am willing to pay big bucks for that tube from a dealer. I have bought new tubes i from dealers just to find that I don't like the sound and there it sits on the shelf.
My point: if you get into the bidding wars for over-priced tubes you are probably going to get burned. Keep your budget cheap and your risk is minimal.
