Bambi B, you are "Feeding the Trolls"
Sorry, this Troll can't resist a meal!12AX7:
2 ea. Amperex "Bugle Boys" (15 mm Plates, large round getter)
8 ea. Amperex labeled "Electronics for Medicine" (15 mm plate, small round getter, but sounds exactly like the Bugle Boys, above)
4 ea. Amperex "Bugle Boys" (17 mm plate, D getter) 2 NEW, 2 NOS, WOW!
2 ea. TKF Smooth Plates
2 ea. Tungsgram
2 ea. Tung Sol
2 ea. Mullard Box Plate M8137 (Sorry Kevin, over rated and over priced)12AT7:
4 ea. TKF
2 ea. Sylvania Gold
2 ea. GE 5 Star6550/6550A:
8 ea. Tung Sol Solid Grey Plates
4 ea. Tung Sol 3 hole gray plates
4 ea. GE 6550A labeled JADIS
4 ea. SylvaniaKT88:
4 ea. KR KT88 (100 hrs. and on their quad and on their way to EBAY)Tubes enough to last more than my lifetime. Too many 12AX7, might part with some of the Amperex 15 mm plate version, as all of the Bugle Boys sound the same to me, and are the best sounding 12ax7 in my system (Cheap Jolida 502A). Sound better than the Telefunken Smooth Plates, to my ears.
Yet to find 12AT7 that is any better than the TKF or Sylvania. Maybe they are just that good (or my map is just not good enough to tell the difference).
Tung Sol 6550 is just one great tube! Matches very will with my rather "Bright" speakers. Granted, the EL34 is a better sounding tube in direct comparison, but if you are locked into the 6550/KT88 tube type in your system, this has to be the best overall value even at $100 a quad as they last FOREVER.
GE 6550A sounds very good in my system, for a tube that is of fairly recent manufacture and half the price of a Tung Sol (but I'd bet they won't last 1/4 as long.)
Sylvania is somewhere between the Tung Sol and the GE, in my view.
WARNING: This poster has been accused of having TIN EARS, and owning a cheap Jolida 501A Amp! Your Mileage May Vary!
