Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Have you ever heard an MV55?

To be honest, my opinion of c-j amps is if you've heard one lousy one, you've heard the complete line in detail, and that experience will serve you in perpetuity!
I probably have heard the MV-55, and the problem is that I would have dismissed it out of hand unless it somehow otherwise broke the mould.
The only one I DO remember hearing is the MV-45, and I thought it was worse than alot of Jolida & ASL or even Golden Tube junk that I've auditioned...
I've also worked on many an MV-75/75a (a hopeless piece of junk in every possible department, from design to build to sonics), the Premier 1 (THE worst High-End amplifier ever made!), Premier 4 & 5, and every year I go to audio shows and see & hear their new junk & it sounds every bit as bad as the old stuff did, so I no longer pay attention to model numbers.
I can believe that the MV-55 sounds better than a Cary 572. The 572 is a garbage tube, at least the Russian ones I've heard are, and I'm not surprised that Cary wouldn't know quite what to do with it either.
If it's not a 300B, 211 or 845, Cary is lost.
Haven't heard the VT-100, only read a glowing review of it (in Stereopiles, I think) by ex-TAS unreviewer Bob Reina, who I always thought was a big tin ear.
Most of the newer ARC amps sound pretty good, at least the hybrids in the Classic series series I've heard (and I think there is/was a stereo amp of lower power in the VT series that I heard at an Audio Show some years ago, it used the Serbian KT-90 output valves. The first day I went to the ARC room the amp was distorting horribly on one channel and they were trying to figure it out. The next day the amp sounded wonderful, they'd replaced the dud KT-90 they found...).
But the older all-tube amps were garbage, no, let me rephrase that:
Their older all-tube amps were GARBAGE, so perhaps the VT-100 is too similar to them in circuit design (another bad 1955 "Build a Golden Ear Amplifier" Radio & TV News project ripoff, or was it the "Junior Golden Ear"?).
At least ARC knows how to read a tube manual, unlike c-j, David Manley, Audio Innovations, Grant, Lumley & so many other so-called "High-End" so-called "Designers" (OK, they are designers. But any of them that dare call themselves engineers that do this kind of stuff should be tarred & feathered & run out of town by their peers.
Too bad they can't be disbarred from practicing by their peers, like doctors. Or stripped of their accreditations. Would save alot of us rubes a heap of dough trying to live in the presence of their pollution).
