Re: 45s and 50s

Power triodes...predecessors of the 2A3 and 300B. Originally globe type (AFAIK that's the only form of the 50), later 45s are "shouldered" tubes, like most of the triodes we are used to seeing.

In a DCSET circuit, you can get a whoopin' watt and a half (or so) out of a 45 or 50. So when the 2A3 came on the scene with it's huge 2.5 to 3W, it's was a "muscle" tube.

Many low-powered triode fanatics think the 45 and 50 superior to the 2A3 and 300B. More unforgiving of bad recordings and more rewarding to good ones, instead of romantic and warm.

Needless to say, with 1.5W max at somewhere around 20% distortion, you aren't gonna here this tube's strengths unless you're in the > 100dB sensitivity range.

Of course, you can really take it to extremes (in case you thought that this wasn't extreme) and build a single-ended 1626 and have a whole half-watt of power to play with.
