Re: Scott 296 at $760 on eBay. 2 days to go (url)

One time I was so mean that I passed up a dog eared one for about $225USD. That was about 4 years ago and I was more interested in selling than buying even more vintage.

The 296 (1962) is the last Scott piece to incorporate the Dynaural Range Supressor. It is the same size as a 4310 tuner, has KT66's, 45 watts a side in AB1 PP.

The Dynaural circuit is quite interesting, although I must admit that I was hard pressed to find a modern use for it. I'm not certain whether the 296 offers the selector settings for all of the different eq's that were employed on 78's and early lp's, but if it does than the combo of selectability and Dynaural would make it a very useful archivist's tool.

The Dynaural circuit is what got Scott started. I suspect that Scott designed the circuit while he worked at Bell as an engineer. He may have been working in the noise reduction area (who knows?). In any case, the circuit was an instant success, he licenced it to Fisher for the domestic market, but within a year had departed to form his own company.

The 296 is similar to the 272 (1960), which is a stereo 210F 1959). These earlier amps used EL34's, so that should amount to some difference. On the other hand, with substitutions and replacements, it's likely that EL34's replaced the KT66's in some of those 296's.
