I have heard 45s, 50s, and 2A3s with vintage horns (Altec, WE) and new ones (classic Audio Reproductions). IMHO all of these tubes are superior to the 300B (Gizmo aside). But the key is the speakers. Jack's using the Galantes, I'm using the T-1 project (with an OTL on the woofer) others use K-horns (designed for the Brook 2A3), La Scalas, or Lowthers and knock-offs. All with high impedances and sensitivity in the high 90s or better.
But no box speakers with dome tweeters and the ilk. That's not to say that it won't work - obviously Cary and Soliloquy have done it, but the Cary's spec at 5W with the KRs. Most other 2A3s spec at 2.5-3W. Both Doc's Paraglow and Ron Welborne's Moondogs come in at this power output with the KR's. So if you're gonna go for flea powered triodes, go with horns. If not, stick with the 300B (I use mine on 92 dB two-way boxes and it sounds great)or the bigger triodes like the new SV572 series.
