Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: To Hyperion

First I have to tell you that I am no SET expert. I am a big SET fan tho - having heard several SET amps including the mighty Ongaku, but I dont own one yet. But I definitely intend to own one before I am 40 hehehe!

1. I've heard several DIY 2A3 amps only, no commercial ones yet, and my impression of em is that the 2A3 triode sound a bit darkish, romantic, more psychedelic, but less detailed, less open and less gutsy than 300Bs. There is an inherent grace and lack of aggression and spunk in the tubes, so I dont think they are the proper tubes for rock! I havent heard the Soliloquys so I cannot comment about those. One thing is sure tho, when and if I roll my own 2A3 amp, I'll definitely wanna use a 97+ dB/w/m speaker with em. :-)

2. 2A3 and 300B dont sound alike, its like EL34 vs 6550. It is so easy to say that one is better than the other but it is not THAT cut n dried in practice. One is indeed inherently more musical, but the other one is inherently more detailed and more dynamic. The solution? You simply got to have both of em. :-)

3. Most low power SETs tend to work well with passives since they have high input sensitivity (er less voltage input needed to output maximum power). I have not verified this, but some say the higher powered SET with 845 or 211 tubes are not as passive-friendly tho.

4. I still havent found one. Simple, point-to-point, 1-2 gain stage hardwired active designs like the Electronic Tonalities, Wright Sound etc designs pique my interest tho ...
