I listened to several rectifiers when I first built my SET 300b, and compared them sonically. Mullard metal base gz34 tubes were the best, followed by 5r4 potato mashers, followed by everything else.
I also found that after a week, with most rectifier tubes, I no longer heard their sonic faults. Not until I put in a better tube. staying within the top 3 or 4 tubes will be satisfying.
