With a capacitor input filter after the rectifier tube the DCR of the secondary winging will change the diodes behavior.The lower the DCR of the winding the higher the charging spikes and this behavior will change between the different rectifier tubes.
For instance a GZ34 with 10uf and a 62 ohm winding will have a 475ma. current spike while delivering 100ma.
A 5r4gy will have a 300ma. current spike under the same conditions.
Maybe the difference you are hearing has more to do with that than the DC voltage difference?
