Re: To Hyperion

Hey Jack. I think this was the Keith that got VTL tiny triodes to go with his passive preamp. I heard these amps and was ready to buy them, but I went to the Hi Fi 99 show in Chicago and made a serious effort to hear all the single ended stuff I could.

The result? I'm hooked and on the bandwagon bigtime (or small time given the watts we're talking about here). I'm also 40 this year and you're right about feeling I wish I could have done this sooner. Oh well, better late than never.

Since I consider you and Hyperion the single ended experts around here, I have a few questions before I proceed down the path to the dark side. Hyperion, you can also jump in with any opinions (and anyone else for that matter).

Here are some starter quesitions:

1. I like both the 300B and 2A3 amps I've heard. While I don't listen at a loud as level as I used too, I do like to pump up the volume every now and then. I'm leaning towards a 2A3 based amp with something like the Soliloquy speakers (great sound) I heard. Any other speaker suggestions would be nice also. The Cary boys said these can rock, but I have to do a home test myself to confirm that. If I get a 2A3 amp outfitted with 5 watt 2A3s, do you think this might do the trick?

2. If 2A3 amps are not the answer to question #1, is a 300B amp with the super duper 300B tubes the way to go?

3. I use the Creek OBH12 passive preamp, which I think is great. Can single ended amps work with passives for the most part, or do I need some gain in the system?

4. If I need an active preamp, are there any you've heard that have the clarity and detail of a passive, or come close? Hyperion, this is where maybe you can chime in.

That's it for now. Thanks for being a beacon of single endedness that us former solid state / present push-pull / future single ended guys can be guided by.

Happy listening.
