Westinghouse 6GH8

I just bought a 1963 Sherwood S-3000V tuner, a version that uses three 6GH8s. It still had the stock tubes in it, but they were all cooked to death except for the two 6AU6s. The 6GH8s were labeled "Sherwood by Westinghouse."

These have an odd construction detail: on pins 2 and 9 inside the tube there is a little white blob of something where the pins come through the envelope. I've never seen this before. Anyone know its purpose?

Having nothing else that uses 6GH8s, I only had one in my tubes box, so I used it in the RF section, subbed a 6EA8 as the detector driver, and put a 6U8A in the MPX section. It seems to work.

Westinghouse 6GH8s seem hard to come by. What might be the most similar? Some Westinghouse tubes look a bit like Sylvania construction inside to me. I ask because I've found if I get as close to the original brand as I can, I may not need a re-alignment.

David
