I tried many variants of all the well-known NOS manufacturers - US and European - in several preamp applications, the Edge T-1, chief among them.
The OG A-frame is detailed, beautifully balanced and well-extended on both ends with just the right touch of sweetness. It does not call attention to itself as did the strident Siemens (microphonic?), Mullard (#2 for me but w/more sweetness), Telefunken (nice but comparatively wooden).
Money aside I preferred it.
The "sexier" Bugle Boys and pinch-waist, white label doodad, etc. have the reputation but if you want an affordable, knockout performer try the A-frames. They'll last a loooong time, too, if not overheated.
I stocked up on these over the past 5 years at about an average cost of $15-20 each and couldn't be more pleased.
Brent Jessee will sell you the $1000 pair or the $200 pair but if you ask him he'll tell you this tube is a great buy. I bought a few pair and some singles from him at considerably less than he's now charging.
Stop obsessing and start enjoying.
