Try some of the Tungsram E88CCs, either the red label or yellow label.
Many people like the Bugle Boy ECC88.
I use two pair of TFKN <> E88CCs in the gain stage of my phono amp followed by a pair of Phillips D-getter E88CC pared with a pair of 70s Siemens E188CC.
The Siemens and Phillips are pared in each channel as output tubes.
At times, I've used PCC88 in place of ECC88. I've played with E288CCs. I've played with 6ES8.
Many times, when I want to hear a particular tube, I buy used ones that check close to "new" specs.
I love the TFKN <> E88CC sound, but have to use tubes following them to take care of the "thin" sound.
My system also uses 6SN7s in the phono stage power supply, and 10 6SN7s in the amplifier--ample opportunity to compensate for the Telies.
What ECC88s sound best in my system is a function of everything that effects the sound in my system.
Once the summer time temps hit, I've got a few different coupling caps to try out--fortunately, I only care how they sound in my system vrs how they "sound".
