Lateral thinking - ECC40 or E80CC

I wouldn't hesitate to rip out any ECC88 or 6922 that could be replaced by a E80CC if the circuit allowed it (excludes cascodes etc).

I'd go further and substitute rimlock sockets and use the ECC40. Leaves all the ECC88 family in the shade. This lovely tube would banish the greyness and blandness and bring back life and exquisite treble.

Have you seen some of the distortion tests for the ECC88?

Joe Bjorn
E80CC .22 .1
ECC40 .13
6SN7 .1 .17
E88CC .18
ECC81 .37
ECC82 .25 .46

http://users.rcn.com/joepage/tubelist.htm now defunct had more distortion tests:- figures are mu followed by distortion at 1K

E80CC Philips Holland 28/.22
8416 Amperex PQ – 6922 12v htr 35/.45
7DJ8 Edicron 35/.5
6922 Ultron PQ 31/.6
6922 Amprex US Navy 32/.75
6922 JAN Phillips / ECG 31/1.2

- you can see the 6922s are MULTIPLES of the lowest distortion tubes. In the case of CV1988 6SN7GTY 20/ .03 which was the best testing in the sample, the 6922s are as bad as 40 times the distortion level. Please note - I'm just reproducing these test results from old notes off the Net somewhere. I have no idea about reliability of the results.
