Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Well....

my buddy has had Duo v.1s for over three years and I probably have between 100 and 200 hours sitting in front of them with many different components.

For tube amps, I've heard them with Andy Bartha custom 45s (1.5w,) Cary 2A3 SEs w/nice RCA tubes (3w,) Manley Retro 300Bs both in SE and PP mode (18w-36w), Supratek Merlots (9w) and now some Viva Auroras w/the 845 running at 30w. I've also heard them with these amps and the new AG plate amps and some Marantz 500 SS monoblocks biamped.

My buddy has wanted a bit more umph in the subs, so he's tried different combos and gotten the newly designed plate amps, when the older ones fried.

At this point, the Auroras with their 30w SE output are sounding nice and are not straining the speakers in the lower octaves, despite the Xover. Approaching loud SPLs, the 45 amps started to clip badly. I liked the Manleys, but their circuit was just a tad noisy for the owner's taste. The Carys were somewhat darkish, but the Merlots were nice and I liked them as well. While 3w and even 1.5w can power the Duos, if you have a good sized room and like to crank them with clarity, you might run into some issues.

The dedicated room is a nicely treated and converted garage falling on the warmer/deader side of things. Music is about 98% traditional Jazz, so the system is tuned for that genre, but he (like Victor and his Trios) is moving towards a bit more power, as opposed to the smaller flea amp SETs.

Anyhow, these are just some observations on my part.

Chris
