I have heard 845 amps that had different driver tubes but I haven't heard the 845/45 combo before so I can't really comment . . .But I have heard poor tubes make a really good amp sound really bad and I have heard poor sound from an amp with great tubes. How an amp sounds is just as dependent on the circuit design as it is the type and quality of tubes used.
As before, what really matters is the sound that you like to hear. I think that a well done 45 SET amp is the best sounding amp that I have heard so far but then again I know a few people that think that a well done 300B SET amp is the best sounding amp as well.
I am concerned that the original post seems to indicate that they are willing to pass judgement on all SET amps and all vintage amps based on some very limited experience and exposure. Maybe I am reading too much into the orignal post. I don't have anything against vintage (I own a H.H. Scott amp and Eico mono preamps that I use in a second system) but have heard more than a few new SET amps that are much, much better than any vintage amp.
Like you, YMMV and this is just my personal taste in what I like to hear. Remember that it doesn't matter how we get there as long as we all enjoy listening to the music!
