Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

If you cant afford interstage, try this:

To use a volume pot effectively, your driver needs to be high enough
gain so that the CD player out (2V) can make the amp go full kilter.
Very few single driver 300B amps can do that.

As Joel mentioned, IT coupling is the full nut, and I highly recommend the Lundahl 1660s for that, however, it will cost you $300
for a pair of Lundahls and the 5842WA or 6C45s that you will use.

If thats too much money, think about the LC coupled driver in the above schematic.. It's not my driver. I took the idea from a driver I saw for Komuro's 300B amp. I can assure you though, it kicks ass!
The driver can be used for LC coupling as well as IT coupling, but
in this schematic, its LC coupled for a fixed bias 845. Will work
stellar for a cathode biased 300B too!

The chokes you need are only $25 or so, Hammond 157G will do it.
The new Electroharmonix 6V6GT are nice because you can run the plates up around 350V like I do in this amp. If you want to be even
CHEAPER, drop a 5K resistor 10W resistor in there to drop the volts
down from 430V to 275V and you can use a $3.00 6W6GT. However, I'd
be tempted to urge you to stick with a 6P5 or a 76, as they sound stunning. I'm figuring the driver state, in parts total, should cost
you about $70 for two channels.

In any case, the driver stage sounds FANTASTIC, is cheap to implement and can be used to go in many directions.
