I looked at the charts and I was, frankly,
afraid to try it! Tom Thomas told me to "just
TRY IT-- and then report to me". He knew I
would get whatever it had out of it...I once had an old PAS-3X all 12AX7A preamp.
I built it from a new kit, and had used
better wire than the kit supplied.I got to playing around with 12AX7's, and soon noticed
that the shorter plate, lower noise versions decidedly
lacked dynamics and fun-factor compared to long-plate,
tall cathode versions. I really hated those low-noise
short plates-- even the Premium Mullards, which were
the better of the lot.I had some old projection equipment that sported G.E.
tall-plate, grey plate tubes. These were used in the
G.E. phono stages of the day also. These things kick the
crap out of any 12AX7A-- they are rare-- these aren't
standard G.E. 12AX7-- they used them for special apps.
These G.E. tubes aren't industrial/military. They are
special-app. audio tubes.I had a CAT preamp and played with that, and also an
Audio Research SP-3 A1. Later, I had Moore Franklins,
and the AR SP-10 with its Russian 6DJ8 variants with
silver plates. I would mod these a bit and squeeze
more music out of them... the bass was weak.Motorola had a tube they used in their 2-way radios--
the 12BZ7A. It had amp-factor just like a 12AX7, and
had the same base wiring and voltages. Plug & Play in
lieu of a 12AX7.No harm in playing with them, so I popped them in
wherever a 12AX7 was used. The improvement with this
tall-plate tube over a standard 12AX7-- in every one of
these apps was a substantial increase in slam, attack,
bass performance, and clarity. NO contest whatsoever!Same thing the old special tall-plate audio-app. G.E.
did-- kick the crap out of the standard 12AX7's.They say, in engine lore, "you can't beat cubic inches".
(if you want guts & power).Capability-wise, the 12AX7A is a Honda Civic.
The 12BZ7 is a Chrysler 426 Hemi. Do they act alike?
They don't-- anyhow, the 12BZ7 can really perform
if used right. Yeah- I was afraid of the linearity--
charts. Tried it anyhow. That's how I am-- never know
what might happen until you try it.
There you are! We have another theory-buster in our midst. As a driver, it takes its place among 2 or 3 tubes that just
sound, and act-- right.-Dennis-
