Again, it comes down to a question of how small is small enough

exactly... this was my point when I enter this conversation. like many things in audio everything is factual until you get down to the core which is subjective. Sure you could do tests of a large sample of experienced listeners to try to quantify the degree of "small" required but there will still be outliers. No amount of facts stacked upon subjective foundation will provide the unassailable results many present.
