RE: Fools Errand.

Ideal is NO capacitor. The larger it gets,
the more musical detail it shorts-out.

That ideal where an infinitely (large enough)
capacitor has minimal effect on music lies to us.

What it is really doing is shorting-out highs to ground.

I speak of an SE amp where the power supply is in
series with the tubes and the output transformer..
The self-bias cap is also included in this string,
so its qualities (sonically) are what you're going to hear..

Push/pull amplifiers exhibit remarkable freedom
from these effects-- I know of several good-sounding
push/pulls that use caps in the hundreds of uf.
Successfully. Try that on a SE amp and it will
drop dead!

For better or worse, the fact remains that SE amps,
if approached as a series string sound FAR more honest
musically than any push/pull. They are sensitive to parts,
but they are ALSO sensitive to music-- not just linear power
frequency response.

To get the best performance out of a SE, one must use the
lowest value parts, and the best quality parts, and
the lowest practicable plate currents that can be
gotten away with.
