RE: ear testing - pros vs. joes ... 120Hz

This needs explaining.

"the guy couldn't even hear..."-- not true.

A SMALL amount of hum is natural to any A.C.
operated tube amplifier, and I do allow a bit.

The reason I do that is not to brag about 60HZ
or 120HZ hum. It is because the draconian methods
that are sometimes used to reduce them are musical
artifact eliminators.

I work to reduce 60HZ and its harmonics as much as I can
WITHOUT messing around with the MUSIC. This means that
chassis layout and wiring layout become paramount, not A.C.
eliminating gimmicks such as D.C. operated Direct-Heated
filament voltages, etc.

The reason I use balanced A.C. for heating is because
I don't like to hear music being decimated by forcing
rectification on the tube's DHT cathode. And yes, I and
others can certainly "hear" the blatant difference.

That's all there is to it. Keep the amp as natural
and simple as you can get it, and then live with
maximum fidelity and a little bit of hum when music
isn't playing. It's the best tradeoff, and it isn't
a problem.
