RE: SE tube amps - when and what to measure ?

Over time design mistakes come to light. Recently I commented on the Vhk being exceeded and that pains have to be taken to keep it well withing manufacturers specifications.

In Sound Practices, issue 10 on page 35 - 36 Matt Kamna has an article "Save those 7199" in the Dyncao ST-70 (also the Dyna Mk 3) where the 7199 develop serious Vhk leakage destroying the tube before their time. The leakage resulted in more distortion with the increased Vhk leakage (normally in the 10's of Mohm, dropping down to 50 ~ 100 Kohm). The fix was to bring the Vhk within manufacturers specifications.
