RE: But my expectation was that the first amp was going to sound great...

Measurements are great! I should add to
that, just to be accurate-- never measure qualitatively
until AFTER break-in.

And how long is that? It varies. With copper wire--
50-100 hours. Oxy-free copper? 1000 hours.
Silver-plated copper? 1000 hours.

EI core transformers? 1750-to-2500 hours.
R-Cores? 1500 hours if audio output.

NOS tubes? 50 hours at 1/3 power. NEW Russian
tubes, or EML or JJ? 500 hours at 1/2 power.

Chassis metals? Aluminum? 50 hours. Steel?
250 hours. Brass? 5 hours.

Resistors? What Brand? Roedersteins-- 75 hours.
Audionote silver? 1000 hours. Mills? 350 hours.
Ohmite Brown Devils? 75 hours. Axial Ohmite/Arcol
types? 750 hours.... and on and on.

Capacitors-- THE sorriest of ALL components?
Don't get me started..........

You can measure f i n a l results SOMEDAY.. In the
meantime--- Try Listen?
