RE: But my expectation was that the first amp was going to sound great...

"In any case, I accept the audibility of break-in provisionally - that is, I keep looking for plausible evidence against the theory, without success. So far, it remains the least-improbable explanation."

That certainly seems like a reasonable viewpoint. I personally have never noticed changes in the sound of an amplifier that would cause me to suspect that capacitors were "settling in," or whatever, but I don't rule out that somebody else may have a different experience. Again, speaking only for myself, I could not imagine detecting subtle changes over time and having any confidence whatsoever that they were "real" changes rather than merely me acclimatising myself to the sound.

The thing that *would* convince me that capacitors in my own system were evolving with time would be if I could measure something that was changing as time went by. For example, in the case of any kind of bypass capacitors it is, I think, uncontroversial to say that their "sound" could only change as a function of time if the residual AC appearing across the capacitors terminals (audio signal or maybe mains hum signal) was changing with time. This can surely be measured to more than sufficient precision to be able to determine whether it lay within the threshold of audibility.

Personally I have such limited trust in my own ears (together with brain processing system) that I would not believe anything I imagined I was hearing, unless it could be confirmed by measurement. I am sometimes impressed by the confidence with which some people assert that they are able to discriminate between subtle audible differences experienced at widely separated time intervals, but it lies so far outside my personal experience of the trustworthiness (or otherwise!) of my own audio processing that I am never sure what to make of it.
