Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

I will soon have TWO monoblocks rebuild with identical all-film caps...

One now running every day for a week and sounding MUCH better than it did at first turn-on and even after a few hours of playing, and one freshly rebuilt to compare it to.

If the one that has by that time been running everyday for two weeks sounds much better than the one fresh off the bench with all new parts and all new film caps, we will know for certain.

Especially if they both sound the same and GREAT after a few weeks, as I hope they will.

And yes, I also feel that most break-in stories are foolishness, but replacing all the caps in a 300B tube monoblock with all new film caps has been an enlightening experience. Expectation bias not the issue as I fully expected 300B SET wonderfulness right off the bench with all new parts.

Also have first hand experience with new small signal tubes where a NEW NOS sounded AWFUL compared to what was originally in the unit. Was about to send it back but decided to wait a few days and after as little as eight hours I could no longer hear a difference between it and the original couple year old tube.

Same brand and all and both tested as new.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
