What is the value of R? I usually think of bias in terms of current. Also, if its push-pull, perhaps your perception that the sound was "off" is most due to imbalance between the two phases, rather than a drop in bias per se, because that drop in bias seems quite inconsequential otherwise and depending upon the value of R.
