Brave man. I started building doing the same thing only the rigs didn't cost that much...
A couple of things:
1. The miller cap of those big plates has be to considered. Which is
the reason for the 12ax7s (and to accommodate the feedback losses)
I don't like these tubes for HiFi (or at least the attempt)
2. If you go with the higher transconductance / lower mu driver
(like the ECC99) and if you have the re-estate consider loading the
the fist section with a CCS. You're trying to suck as much mu out
as possible. If no room for CCS, consider adding gain upstream
and chucking the pot...done that before.
Not going to comment on the direct couple. I have never seen the reason to implement.
BTW, there are some small foot print CCS kits out there..
