the toroids are surplus things.... jameco used to have them for about $6... just google surplus toroid.... and feel free to send me a link before you buy... you don't want anything potted. 25VA is nice.
look at the + side of the filament... electrons striking that have two paths to ground. through the resistance (and inductance) of the filament, or through the filament supply.... if the filament supply has a bigass cap there its impedance is much less than the impedance of the filament so a part of the ac current travels through the last cap to ground creating two different signal loops. now when you leave a choke as the last element, the electrons striking the (ok emitted from) + side of the filament will just have to traverse the same path as the electons striking th e- side of the filament.as for the shared filament supply, i guess it depends how you look at it, and want to present the theory, i have never has problems with it, but i also feel a bit of crosstalk might not be such a bad thing.... hell a mono recording has 100% crosstalk, but many of them sound really nice in stereo :-)
