I tend to believe this as well, that the "problem" with DC filaments isn't that the filament is running on DC, but it's the unavoidable messing with the signal path from the filament.

Certainly, it seems like the usual rectifier/filter/linear regulator could do a lot of damage to the ausio path.

That's why I think a common-mode choke can help a lot. It keeps the audio path out of the heater supply.
