I have a MS in physical chemistry from Stanford and a BA in math. I think I have a basic understanding of physics. Speaking of physics, have you considered the fact that air is a non-linear medium for the transmission of sound pressure waves? Take a gander at the adiabatic pressure/volume curves for air. Looks to me like sound passing through air will be asymmetrically distorted. Oh my! Think of the 2nd harmonic distortion being generated. How can we ever listen to music through such an imperfect medium?
