Lynn Olson looked at the harmonic distortion profile differences between RC coupling and transformer coupling. I don't know if this study is still available online, but the results were that IT coupling tends produces a monotonically decreasing set of harmonics; whereas, RC coupling produced an uneven set of harmonics with some higher order harmonics more prominent than others. There have been studies that have shown that listeners prefer amplifiers that produce a monotonically decreasing series of harmonics to those that produce an uneven series of harmonics. This is of course all subjective. I would think that one would need to try it out on ones own ears to make a decision.
