As I understand it, the cathode bypass resistor when used in a parallel feed arrangement as you describe is there to AC ground the cathode. This is to kill the feedback caused by feeding an attenuated signal from the OPT primary in series with the parafeed cap. It's inverted so it's negative feedback. Why it sounds so distorted I don't know.
