I went to 5GHz and problem solved.

The cable to the antenna greatly affects the db gain, as does the type and quality of the antenna.
David on ElPaso TubeAmps runs through objective tests regarding the above.

Try some of his DIY antennas with good coax cable or post your concerns to him.
