I went through the same scenario as Tre' several years ago. Excellent personal example/explanation... BTW.
If you are running a 12V heater supply, the 12xxx gets wired in series....heating both sections.
Or, 1/2 the CT section of the 12V tranny in (pseudo) parallel for 6.3V but, both sections will run at 6.3V.(4,5-9)
Real estate not prohibitive, install a 6.3V.Hammond heater tranny.
That's what I did.
