I thought that I'd throw in my 2 cents;> )
At the risk of preaching to the choir...
Some basic rules of thumb...keep the impedance as low as practical which includes the PS Transformer. I typically work with a tranny that can provide at least 2x the current needed. Use a PS tranny that has multiple secondaries that you can parallel. Don't add power resisters to align with the plate requirements of the output section. If you need these, you have already screwed up.. Electrolytic caps should be avoided. There might be some on the market that can be as fast as Film caps...I haven't tried them.
You can definitively hear unnecessary impedance in the PS but I don't subscribe to the sub critical choke input notion. With that said, I have not yet tried this approach... when I get some time, to screw around, I will eventually. I suspect that I'll find find some interesting dynamics and some unpalatable ripple...
