I found the article and attached the link for others...
Yeah, for EL34s - I can see where tying the surpressor negative would
lower the partition noise. Interesting that the only place I've ever
seen that done is very high performance scientific gear using a pentode
input amp! :)
What is it that you think you hear with this change?
I can suggest some other beam tubes in that same TV Deflection class
that you are dealing with... The 6AU5 - plentiful - good too - it's used
as the driver for the 845 on DeHavillands $9000 beast that people like at the shows. The 6DQ5 - a BEAST - seriously big overbuilt tube, designed for abuse.
Last but not least, if you want to take the project you have and bump
it into glowing tungsten DHT territory - doing what I did with 811A's
is suprisingly cheap. You can get nice 811A for about $40 a pair! You'll
need two 6.3V 4A transformers and some sockets... I think an 811A
add-on might only be $60 in parts for both channels!
So long as you have a 5K OPT good for 80-100mA - you are totally good to go! That 6Y6 gets turned into a cathode follower and you hook it straight up to the 811A's power grid. Shazam. In business with DHT.
