My ears tell me , with my home setup, a 2 stage amp increases sound stage, detail and provides a more "over all musical presentation" as I increase the transconductance of the driver.... until a gain limitation is reached on the lower end....
When it comes to the ear as a passive device, repeatability and perceived accuracy is variable..
We would all be better if we could all sit and listen to our gear together
in the same reference room...would be enlightening...
Might find that similar goals are met using different approaches...
