Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

Cary uses the 805 tube

And a technical guy at one of these boutiquey places here in the Northeast told me he measured the plate voltage once and it was not 1kV - more like 800V. So, that might give you a clue as to where an economically attainable operating point for these things is... Of course, he forget to measure the grid voltage (duh!) The Cary 805s do sell easily - I think mainly because they are beautiful, and people can use them to fire their B&W's up... Still, the typical buyer for these is usually a partner-type at a law firm, or a middle-aged surgeon, or an investment-industry guy with regular, fat bonus checks.. They are not bought by members of the single 6-digits club (i.e. most engineers or senior manager types like most of us) LOL

The only thing that really makes the 811A fun in its all A2 mode is the fact that a 400-450V power supply and 5K OPT's are fairly routine items in most peoples benches.. You start mucking with the other A2 possibilities and you need to put cash on the table for both the power supply and the output..
