RE: tube rectifier recommendation

mikeyb,

Whether you hear a rectifier or not has a lot to do with the amp's complexity and color. A very simple topology with no additional feedback (SET) will provide different flavor with different Rectifier makes and types. I usually consider PS impedance and go with a good make of GZ34 for power amps.

If you know the tubes using the B+ and the plate curves, you can get a feel for what happens when you roll rectifier types and assess whether your amp will handle less PS impedance without over taxing something down stream. As stated in one of the other follow ups, beware of filament requirements.

You can definitely hear differences between lets say a new JJ GZ34 and a Mullard made back in "the day". I have had good results with Russian twin triodes for preamp applications...haven't tried the Russian rectifer offering...:)
