The first capacitor takes a severe beating in the form of repetitive
charging (ripple current). If one is going to fail catastrophically,
it's likely the first filter cap.
The best cap to use for severe beatings is an oil filled metallized film
motor run cap. They are infact designed for this duty as companions to large industrial motors. Small values 4-8 uF can be found in relatively small cans (i.e. the kind that can fit in the palm of your hand and be
stuck under the chassis) They are good for 60,000+ hours of operating life.
