advice needed on "designing" a volume attenuator.

Greetings- Due to a broken Bournes 500K stereo volume pot on a recently acquired preamp (Perfectionist Audio Component Reference II), I've decided to have one built by Shallco.I've had them build pots for me in the past, most commonly 100k - 30 step @ 1.5db per step for line stage preamps and have been very pleased with the results. The problem that I have with this preamp, especially the phono section, is that is has extremly high gain (probably 60dB or more).I'd like to design a pot that allows more use of the steps, so that it would start getting loud at about 12:00 noon, instead of 7:00 am like its' current configuration. I'm not looking for resistor values, just the amout of attenuation needed to be able to use more of the "dial". Would something like 3dB for each of the first 15 or so steps followed by 2 dB steps for the remailing 15 positions accomplish this? For some reason, I have always had a hard time "grasping" the implementation of switches and pots. Suggestions?? Thank You, paul
