Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

Gain requirements is set by your signal source: CD or Preamp

If you intend on NOT using a preamp, ever, and will feed your CD output
to the amp, then you'll need a tube with a mu as close to 60 as you can
get. Avg CD player has a standard 2Vp-p output.

OTOH, if a preamp is part of your life, find out what its max output is.
Many preamps have a 10Vp-p output, or so. That would reduce your input
tube requirement to a mu=13 or so. (i.e. a 6J5/76 type tube).

I believe in preamps ; despite the attractive minimalism and simplicity of a 2-stage SET with an input attenuator. Preamps give your some source selectors. They tend to come with nice remote controls. Whats more, depending on your needs - a preamp with balanced outputs can be used to ship signal from one side of a large room (where you sit) to another side of the room, where your amps and closest to their speakers. If you want
flexibility in laying out your room/furniture, and you have religious belief in transformer-coupled XLR for moving signal 30 feet like I do - then the preamp is a big advantage in your life.
