The only Lundahl input transformer I have any experience with is the 1544A; and it definitely sounded best with a source Z of 200 ohms or less.
I'm speculating that the 1676 would perform similarly (the spec sheets for both transformers refer to a 600 ohm source).
On the other hand, I've had good results with the Slagle autoformers using a 2.5+ k source.
BTW: I share your preference for plate follower outputs.
