RE: The Way Things Work (diode current in full wave)

Looking at the traces, I'd say a harmonic analysis would show a lot of higher order harmonics being generated for the CLC case. The "critical" LCLC case looks to be pure sine wave. In a resent personal communication Kevin Carter of K&K Audio told me how in developing his new differential phono stage he needed more B+ and as an expediant switched to a capacitive input PS. This design uses cascode DN2540s for the differential "tails" and also in the B+ supply. Thus there is a lot of isolation from the PS built in. Yet when a larger PS transformer was installed and the PS was switched back to choke input, a transformation in the sound could be heard. Lynn Olson has an interesting paper linked on his web site where he compares an audio PS to a Tesla coil. Interesting read. I think a lot of the sonic differences stem from the high freq. junk generated by the high current pulses created by a large cap placed directly after the bridge. In many cases, adding some series resistance between the bridge and first cap can improve things by slowing the charging time of the cap.
