I built my first tube amp in 1970; and by the early '80s, I thought I was pretty good at it...that's about the time that I met Jeff Medwin. He and his mentor Bob Fulton were the first people I'd ever encountered who talked in serious terms about how things sounded vs how they measured...they were light-years beyond me - using 6B4Gs and old oil capacitors - it was an unbelievable breath of fresh air! As much as anyone I can think of, Jeff taught me to be confident in what I was hearing. It was an invaluable lesson.
I've never read either of Morgan Jones' books; but almost certainly would if one showed up under my Christmas tree. I can't recall the last time I looked something up in the RDH4, either...but that doesn't make them invalid sources of information. Very few days pass that I don't ponder a classic schematic, or ponder a new/different way to accomplish something electrically.
I've been fascinated by the high-distortion end of amplification lately [for guitar]...a lot like figuring out the worst possible way to design something ;-)
but, we learn from all of these approaches.
I still want to try the low-everything/Fraker flywheel supply [however, I'll use mercury vapor rectification]; but I've gotta get ready for VSAC, AND finish up my customer's phono preamp.
I still haven't figured out why cathode bypass caps sound so bad, but they do...there's still so much to learn...
