I really appreciate the information, especially the different takes.
This preamp is used as a headphone amp most of the time. I do hear the slightest changes, because the output is <1 inch from my ears. If trying a SSR, the hash would be dealt with in the traid chokes this pre utilizes. The rectifier is connected directly to the tranny- followed by some caps/chokes. I didn't build it, but I was told the design is a loose take on Eric Barbour's "Brute Force". I found Barbour's schematic (see pic above for the power supply portion), and compared it to my pre and they are, indeed, very similar. I want to fine tune it and build a second one from scratch- one that more closely follows the orignal design. I inquired about solid state rectifiers because, to my ears, the pre currently lacks the dynamic output my Grado's crave. I thought solid state rectifiers would improve upon this (?). The pre has just about everything else good going for it, though.
I did find some plug-in SSR's from RadioDaze that seemed to emulate a tube recto. Would they be a better choice? The benefit in using these is that I can keep everything the same including the socket and cosmetics. I could always swap back to a tube at will....
