Before subbing any rectifiers there are a couple VERY important things to consider:
1. Voltage drop differs from one rectifier to the next. A change in rectifier type can significantly change the B+ voltage.
2. Different rectifiers have different limits on the size of the first filter cap (in a cap input filter). The 50-60 uf you may use with a 5AR4 may kill a 5R4 or 5V4.
3. The heater current draw varies significantly between some types. As has been mentioned, a 5U4 draws about 3 amps - that's 50% more than a 5AR4!
4. The warm up time is quite different between indirectly and directly heated types.
All those need to be considered before swapping rectos...
If you want a 5Y3 type with indirect heating get a 6087 or 6106. Both types are essentially indirectly heated 5Y3s. The 6087 isn't too pricey, but a 6106 Bendix "Red Bank" can be pretty steep these days.
