Tubes require a slow start for longevity and if you replace the 5y3 with some sand rectifier then the B+ will come on like gangbusters. Then there is the cosmetic issue of having a vacant socket that some future owner doesn't know what to do with. Also some power transformers are not designed for the peak inverse voltage a sand rectifier can produce. The sand rectifier is much more efficient and the voltage out of the sand rectifier will be much higher than the voltage coming out of the 5y3. And then there is the spike hash that this sand rectifier is going to add to your noise floor. And you can't get rid of it without adding an expensive choke or extensive regulation. Just my two cents! Ray
