Greetings- One other thing that I recently experienced while bringing a power supply up to the correct voltage using a variac was quite shocking. Even though I'm going to replace the mutli-section can caps with NOS (reformed), I still slowly ramp up the voltage while occasionally "feeling" the temperature of the old can caps to make sure that it's not heating up (pretty good sign of an impending failure).Well, the other day I was at about 80 VAC on the variac yielding about 300 or so VDC on the can cap, it was still running cool. I then bumped it up to 90 VAC and waited a short time and then decided to feel the cap for overheating. ZAP!!!!, That extra 10 volts was the breaking point for the can cap and I recived about 325+ vdc which nearly knocked me on my ass. Moral of the story, when reforming the old can caps, always check to see if there is voltage present on the outside of the can before checking to see if the cap is heating up. Scared the sh*t out of me. I hate it when that happens. regards, wpod
